This Month's Coffee Selection
A Family Business With a Purpose!
This month's coffee was made possible by changes in the Ethiopian export laws allowing some suppliers/exporters to build direct relationships with international importers. Recognizing the opportunity, Mijane Woresa, a 30 year veteran in the coffee industry, established an export company offering lots from his two Gedeb washing stations (one in Halo Hartume and the other in Worka Sakaro).
Mijane incorporated his sons into the company and has chosen (as coffee people often do) to focus on improving the lives of the community around his family business. Proceeds from the business are used to help improve the coffee production and profitability of small local farmers. They also contribute to social projects, infrastructure and education initiatives.
Looking at the elevation that this coffee is grown, you may notice that it is among of the highest grown coffees we've offered. As discussed with previous origins, these elevations experience slower cherry production allowing the fruit to fully develop as well as the stone to absorb nutrients for a longer period. High elevation coffee are sought after for their quality and flavours. This month's Yirgacheffe is a great example of the characteristics we expect from this region.
Roaster’s Notes:
This month's coffee was roasted one pound at a time in our sample roaster, then blended before being packaged and shipped. This allowed us to roast at varying levels from a light/medium to a more traditional medium roast. This may appear as slightly visible colour variations in your beans. The result should create a balanced coffee, while allowing some of the flavours you expect in a lighter roast to peek through. It was also simply fun to roast over an open flame.
This Ethiopian origin roasted similarly to others from the region, preferring a lower charge and smooth longer roast time to allow the beans to roast evenly. We chose this coffee based on a supplier recommendation as well as the flavour profile offered on there listing. While we found this coffee mild compared to previous offerings, we we're pleasantly surprised by the flavour hints that we were able to notice.
While cupping this month look for hints of Peach (similar to last month) followed by …wait a minute, if you want cupping notes Go Cup Yourself!
