This Month's Coffee Selection
For a more detailed look at the historical significance of Yemen in coffee's worldwide importance, have a look at our December 2022 blog post "Gotta Know Your Roots". If you've been with us for a while, you'll notice that we've tried this origin before. Over the December holidays, we gained a lot of new Cuppers, so we've decided to circle back and retry some of favourites from past Cuppings. This will allow our long time members to reexperience past Cuppings and compare their notes, while new cuppers will enjoy these coffees for the first time. It's also a great opportunity for our long time cuppers to experience the different subtleties that different crop years have.
A Bit About Yemeni Coffee
As I mentioned, our December 2022 look at this origin will give you a great overview of what makes coffee from Yemen so special. In a nutshell, Yemen experiences low annual rainfall, competition from higher return crops, political turmoil, and countless challenges facing its supply chain, making any specialty grade coffee from Yemen a delight. To make Yemeni coffee possible, it often takes combining the crops of several farmers, often from different regions to produce enough for export. It is not uncommon in our experience to find smaller bags (relative to the 60 and 70 kilogram bags we are used to) for sale from importers. This mix of regions, elevations, varietals and farming techniques provided for amazing differences from year to year. How does this year's crop compare to the one we Cupped in 2022, lets all Go Cup Ourselves and find out!
Roaster’s Notes:
This month's coffee was roasted to a medium level for a few reasons. As usual, a medium roast makes the coffee more accessible to a wider audience, but in the case of this Yemen origin, a medium roast allows the coffee to become more balanced in both appearance and taste. With all of the different regions involved, this coffee can vary in the size and harvesting styles of the beans, even within a single bag. This Yemeni offering was very quiet in first crack and roasted surprisingly even as a light roast. Regardless, after cupping , we decided to add the depth that a medium roast can bring.
