This Month's Coffee Selection
It's holiday season again, and around here, that calls for a special coffee selection. December's coffee origin is world renowned and recognized as a luxury coffee at its finest. Grown at an altitude of 4500+ feet (above sea level) on the slopes of Saint-Catherine's peak in the Jamaican Blue Mountains, in fertile loam, under ideal growing conditions, the list goes on!

About the Estate
This month's coffee comes from Clifton Mount Estate, Jamaican Blue Mountain.  This particular Estate and its owners have a pedigree going back to the 1700's.
Clifton Mount Estate is known for its eco-forward philosophy taking into consideration its impact on the surrounding plants, animals and people. It's coffee trees are dispersed among palms, plantain, various shade species, and local flowers. The Estate's appearance is often compared to an immaculately manicured for vineyard and it is the only Jamaican coffee farm certified by the Rainforest Alliance.

To ensure its quality and distinguished name, Clifton Mount Estate processes its crop on-site controlling every aspect of production, from seedling selection and planting, tree maintenance and care, hand picking of ripe cherries, all the way to the wet and dry processing. The pride and love of coffee is evident in the unwavering attention given to the craft at this estate.

A Bit About Blue Mountain Coffee's Price Tag
Blue Mountain Coffee must be certified by the Jamaica Commodities Regulatory Authority. It is grown on the Blue Mountains in the parishes of Portland, St. Andrew, and St. Thomas maintaining its rarity and ensuring its uniform quality.  It's crop is popular among the island's tourists and over 80% of its yield is exported to Japan. That mean the remaining crop available for export is subject to the economical principle of supply and demand (i.e. if you want it, be prepared to pay for it)!.

Blue Mountain Coffee's name recognition brings a premium price and for that reason a lot of "fakes". Blue Mountain's name is often used to sell coffee to less experienced coffee drinkers at an inflated price (especially online). Coffees such as Blue Mountain Inspired, Style and Blend, often contain very little or no actual Blue Mountain Coffee. There are also coffees grown at lower elevations such as Jamaica High Mountain (grown under 3000 feet) and Jamaica Supreme/Low Mountain (under 1500 feet) that may get "mislabelled" and sold as 100% Blue Mountain. Don't get me wrong, these coffees can be great, as long as they are properly labeled and priced fairly.

As with any premium commodity, if a price is too good to be true, it probably is! If you want to try Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, make sure you buy from a reputable supplier. Better yet, buy directly from a roaster you trust. Since you already know and trust Go Cup Yourself, and we've already roasted and shipped this 100% Jamaican Blue Mountain to your door, and we're just as curious about how it tastes, lets all Go Cup Ourselves and find out!

Roaster’s Notes:
This month's coffee was roasted to a medium level to allow our cuppers to experience Blue Mountain coffee at its finest.  While Jamaican Blue Mountain may make for an exceptional every day cup, it's limited supply and availability may make it cost prohibitive for most of us (but that doesn't mean we can't treat ourselves)!

Jamaican Blue Mountain (Grade/Size 1) its highly quality controlled and extremely consistent in size and moisture making it a pleasure to roast. While it can take a relatively high initial charge, we prefer to use a moderate initial charge and ensure an even first crack. Blue Mountain has a proud sounding first crack, comparable to other high quality washed origins. While this coffee may not boast over the top berry or floral notes, it is subtle and refined and everything we would expect in the name of luxury.

While cupping look for a hint of Hazel Nut with floral hints and …wait a minute, if you want cupping notes Go Cup Yourself!
