AI's Brewing Instructions and Preference
The question we get aske most often is without a doubt:
What is the best coffee?
To which we have a few answers, everyone at our shop has a favorite for which they will fight endlessly, but in actuality, whatever coffee you like best is the best coffee for you.
The next most common question we get is:
What is the best way to make coffee?
This has a similar answer the the above. It really depends on your resources and time commitment at the end of the day. That being said there are pros and cons to every brewing method. So to avoid human bias we asked ChatGPT to list the most common brewing methods and offer simple instructions for each. With a few minor human edits, this is how computers make coffee.
The follow up question we always get without fail is:
How do you make your coffee?
We'll save the answer for the end of this article. For a twist, we also asked ChatGPT for its preferred method and we'll include that in our closing.
1. Drip Coffee Maker (Automatic Coffee Machine)
Preparation Instructions:
Add a coffee filter to the basket.
Measure and add ground coffee (1–2 tablespoons per 6 oz of water).
Fill the water reservoir to the desired level (many glass coffee carafes have volume measurements on them to assist you).
Turn on the machine and wait for the brewing process to finish.
2. French Press (Bodum or Plunger Coffee)
Preparation Instructions:
Heat water to about 195–205°F (90–96°C), or bring water to a boil and let it cool slightly (about a minute).
Add coarsely ground coffee (about 1:15 ratio of coffee to water).
Pour the hot water over the coffee grounds.
Stir gently and let it steep/rest for about 4 minutes.
Press the plunger down slowly and serve.
3. Pour-Over (Chemex, Hario V60, )
Preparation Instructions:
Heat water to 195–205°F (90–96°C) or bring water to a boil and let it cool slightly (about a minute).
Place a filter in the cone shaped funnel/dripper and rinse with hot water.
Add medium-coarse ground coffee (about 1:16 ratio of coffee to water).
Slowly pour hot water in a circular motion over the coffee grounds evenly, allowing it to "bloom" for 30 seconds (for added control, you can use a goose neck kettle).
Continue pouring in slow, controlled movements.
Let the coffee drain completely before serving.
4. Espresso Machine
Preparation Instructions:
Use finely ground coffee (for best results experiment with different grind levels until you find one you love, warning...this is a rabbit hole).
Fill and tamp the portafilter evenly.
Lock the portafilter into the machine and start extraction.
The shot should take about 25–30 seconds.
Serve as is or use as a base for drinks like lattes or cappuccinos.
5. AeroPress
Preparation Instructions:
Heat water to 175–205°F (80–96°C) or bring water to a boil and let it cool slightly (about a minute).
Insert a filter into the cap and rinse it with hot water.
Add finely or medium-ground coffee (about 14g per 200ml of water).
Pour hot water and stir for 10 seconds.
Insert the plunger and press down slowly over 30 seconds.
6. Moka Pot (Stovetop Espresso)
Preparation Instructions:
Fill the bottom chamber with water (up to the valve).
Add finely ground coffee to the filter basket (do not tamp).
Assemble the pot and place it on medium heat.
When the coffee starts gurgling, remove from heat and serve.
7. Cold Brew
Preparation Instructions:
Use coarsely ground coffee (1:4 to 1:8 coffee-to-water ratio).
Combine with cold water in a jar or pitcher.
Stir and steep in the refrigerator for 12–24 hours.
Strain with a fine mesh or coffee filter.
Serve over ice or dilute with water/milk.
8. Turkish Coffee
Preparation Instructions:
Use extra-fine ground coffee.
Add coffee, water, and sugar (optional) to a Cezve (Turkish coffee pot).
Heat slowly and stir until foam forms.
Just before it boils, remove from heat and pour into cups.
Let the grounds settle before drinking.
So there you have it, eight of the most popular coffee brewing methods as established by an AI searching all of human knowledge.
Now as promised, both our favourite brewing methods followed by ChatGPT's.
My favourite brewing method year round is cold brew.
I use a 12 cup glass French Press with an air tight lid, if i had a larger one I would use it.
Preparation Instructions:
I use really coarsely ground coffee.
I eyeball the coffee grounds to between 1/2 and 2/3 of an inch into the beaker depending on how strong I want it.
I fill the beaker with cold water and seal the container with an air tight lid. If I can't find the lid, I put saran wrap over the top and seal it with an elastic.
I place the magic potion maker in the fridge over night.
In the morning I wake up and rub the sleep from my eyes. Remembering that I took the time to prepare coffee the previous night, I smile and head to the fridge.
I remove the elixir from the fridge, attach the press/plunger and slowly press down in awe.
I usually drink this potion straight, I'll add ice in the summer if I want to sit in the sun and think about how great life is. If I forget to prep my cold brew in the evening, I will use a pour over or drip machine, it makes little difference as the day is already ruined.
As for ChatGPT, its answer was as follows:
"I don't drink coffee myself, but if I had to pick based on flavor, ritual, and versatility, I'd go with the pour-over method (like Chemex or V60).
It allows for precise control over brewing variables (grind size, water temperature, and pour speed), which brings out the nuanced flavors of the coffee. Plus, the whole process feels like a mindful ritual—perfect for coffee lovers who enjoy the craft as much as the taste."
